VoIP performs best with a small amount dedicated bandwidth, a quality focused codec used and low latency from the handset to the SIP trunk provider.
While it is possible to use a IP based phone system when a few of these requirements are absent, you will have to keep in mind that the quality of the service will drop, sometimes quite drastically.
Can you use VoIP over satellite Internet?
Voice over IP (VoIP) will work over satellite internet, however not necessarily well or reliably, due to a number of quality factors impacted by Satellite connections. These include:
- Latency
- Jitter
- Bandwidth
- Packet loss
As seen below, latency in particular can become a real issue over satellite internet connections, causing a noticable delay in communication.
When is a satellite connection implemented?
A satellite internet connection is usually implemented as a last chance of getting a connection to the internet. These are generally places such as a rural home or businesses, or as a redundant internet link.
Whether it’s a rural home or rural business, using an IP based phone system may be the only choice for having a phone system at all. It is common that the legacy copper/mobile infrastructure won’t be available to the rural parts of Australia and New Zealand, therefore making it impossible to make or receive phone calls.
Latency over satellite
This latency causes your voice on the call to be delayed and makes it feel like you are talking to someone on the other side of the world, even if they are in the same country.
